The Junior Civic Academy and Traditional Adult Civic Academy Begin August 17th

Jr Civic Academy_edit

The next session for the DeSoto Civic Academy begins in August with a new twist.  The City’s traditional Civic Academy has been expanded to allow 11th and 12th grade students who might be interested in pursuing an internship that could lead to a career in local government to attend along with their parents and other adults.   The Junior Civic Academy will run concurrently with our traditional Civic Academy for adults.  Applications are being accepted for both programs.  Interested adults or students are encouraged to apply now to attend.   Students, please follow this link for the Junior Civic Academy application . .  Adults may register by following this link Adult Civic Academy Application.

Both the Junior Civic Academy and the traditional Civic Academy meet together beginning August 17, 2017 and continue every Thursday from 5:45 pm to 8:30 pm for 11 weeks.  Sessions are hosted at DeSoto City Hall and other City facilities.  This is a free program and dinner is provided at each session.

The traditional Civic Academy offers adults a great “behind the scenes” look at the inner workings of our municipal government.  Broadening this program with the addition of the Junior Civic Academy introduces high school juniors and seniors to career opportunities in public administration, economic development, municipal finance and budgeting, library services, public works, parks and recreation, police, fire and EMS and much more.  Since both programs meet concurrently, parents are encouraged to attend with their teen.  Completion of this free program offers students community service credit hours and opportunities for internships in municipal government that could lead to employment after high school graduation.  Adults learn about volunteer opportunities serving on a City board or commission.

“I am very excited that we are expanding our Civic Academy to include students,” said DeSoto Mayor, Curtistene S. McCowan. “This unique educational opportunity will include some unforgettable moments for students whom we expect to become outstanding future leaders in the City of DeSoto and beyond.” I can’t wait to meet the high school juniors and seniors selected to become part of our inaugural JCA Class!”
